When you work at home, you know that the work is not always predictable and fitness can become an issue. Most of the time spent when you work at is in a chair or on the couch with a computer on your lap. Every freelance writer needs to integrate fitness and movement into their lives not only to keep healthy, but to ensure that they are thinking to the best of their abilities. You shouldn’t let the freedom a freelance lifestyle has to offer keep you from being healthy.
When working at home, there isn’t much movement except from the bed to the computer which can be a big change from the commuting and walking amongst offices that once took place. If you write profusely and often acquire mail, a simple way to incorporate movement is to get a P.O. Box. This will force you out of the house to check it.
If you are a work at home parent, consider walking to pick up your children or joining a weekly gym class which provides childcare. If you have an ipod, download writer’s podcasts from the internet and take a walk around the block around midday when your body temperature is at its lowest. This will get you moving and will also keep your body temperature up which will increase your attentiveness and your writing.
By staying immobile all day your joints run the risk of getting stiff while your metabolism slows down. A good habit is to pick up is to stop typing every fifteen minutes and let your hands rest for thirty seconds before picking up again. Also, get up every thirty to forty five minutes and walk around the house to stretch your legs and keep the blood flowing.
Naturally, working at home is conducive to easy kitchen access. But don’t let this tempt you! Even if you work at home, you don’t want to let that cloud your professional mind set. Keep lots of water handy so that if you do feel like grazing, water is there to keep you hydrated and will alleviate the nagging feeling that the kitchen is so close.
If you do often like to snack throughout the day, try stocking the kitchen with things other than quick junk food snacks that come in a box or a plastic wrapper. Keep fruits and veggies handy as well as protein in the form of granola bars and peanut butter. If you are meeting clients or interviewing in person, meet at their office instead of meeting for lunches or coffee.
