Business and Blogging

There’s no question, blogs are big news in online advertising with some top industry blogs attracting over 10,000 unique visitors a day!

A blog is like a window into your mind-giving your customers access into your thoughts, opinions, and expertise. A blog is a great way to position yourself as unique in your market, generate consumer interest, and promote your product or business. But not every business blog succeeds. Here are a few tips for better business blogging.

Update regularly. Think of your blog as a sort of online newsletter. Just as readers would lose interest in your business newsletter if you didn’t stick to your publishing schedule, so they will forget all about your blog if they keep returning, only to find last month’s content still up. Set a schedule you can live with-be it daily, weekly, or monthly-and stick to it. You want your customers to get used to reading your blog, and if you don’t update regularly, you won’t stay at the top of their lists.

Know your market. Just as with any advertising medium, your blog needs to be tailored to your audience. It’s more than just an online diary containing your random thoughts on your industry-it’s a marketing tool. So pick topics that are of interest to your customers, offer tips and advice in your industry, or provide reviews of other products related to your business-in most cases it’s best to stay away from direct competitors, however.

Keep it well-written. People tend to shrug off bad grammar and spelling as though they aren’t important. But the truth is that mistakes in your writing can damage your credibility as an expert. Bad writing in general-even without overt mistakes-can make your blog difficult to read. If you know that writing isn’t your strong point, delegate the blog to a talented employee or hire a freelance writer rather than publish it in a less-than-stellar form.

Incorporate keywords. There’s nothing wrong with a little search engine traffic, right? Just as with a page in your website, work a relevant keyword or phrase into your copy and your title. Be sure to keep it natural-don’t cram your copy so full of the keyword that it’s difficult to read.

Think of your blog as a conversation-starter. It’s great if you can get readers posting back to you about the topic. Be an active conversationalist-respond back to people who ask you a question or voice an opinion. Readers like the idea that you’re active and accessible to them.

Keep the tone professional. A snappy, even slightly provocative tone can be a great way to keep reader interest up-depending on your audience, of course. But always keep your tone professional and never say anything that can come back to haunt you. Although blogs generally started out as online diaries, remember that these are very public venues and whatever you say reflects back on you, for good or ill. Flaming may have been funny when blogging was new, but they never make you look good in the business sphere-no matter what industry you’re in.

Keep it short and sweet. Readers tend to like short, concise posts, bullet points and lists-easy to read and understand. Many professional bloggers will tell you that it’s better to write short posts often than it is to write long posts at long intervals. Content matters, however-make sure you’re offering high quality advice or opinions. If you link to other web sites and articles, offer insightful opinions on what you’re linking to.

Blogging is a great way to increase your traffic, raise your search engine rankings, and generate consumer interest and loyalty. Follow these tips and above all, stick with it for more than a few months-and your business will see the benefits.

Don’t Make These Common 4 Affiliate Mistakes!

By: Johanna Piittala

Myths concerning affiliate marketing are appealing and attractive. People who do not know the entire system the wrong way round are prone to believing that it is something capable of giving them great fortune overnight. Stories concerning affiliates who earn tremendous amounts of money swim in their heads, and while these stories are as true as they can be, there are those who believe that they are going to have the same fortune once they indulge in this particular business.

It is true enough that affiliate marketing is financially rewarding. People who have gone through everything to be able to succeed in this business are reaping the seeds that they untiringly sowed. Many of them enjoy the kind of existence that was not possible for them to have had under ordinary circumstances. Having gone through the A-Z of affiliate marketing, however, these people are the ones who know that while such business is lucrative, there is absolutely no easy money in it.

Ignorance of this fact is one of the main reasons why there are people who fail miserably in the internet business. There are those who believe in myths concerning the easy money involved in systems such as affiliate marketing. They do not know that there are those who have wasted time, effort and too many resources in trying to pursue the life of ease that they believe this business will give them. And so they go into affiliate marketing armed with nothing but myths and fantastical notions of wealth swimming in their consciousness, never realizing that they bound to make mistakes that would prove to be their downfall.

What may be the reason why in businesses such as affiliate marketing, many are called but few are chosen? Perhaps the answer lies on the fact that many affiliates make mistakes that result from their ignorance of facts concerning how the entire business runs. Affiliate marketing is not as simple as an affiliate promoting a merchant’s wares through his website and getting paid for it. It is also about knowing the market and the customers at hand.

Discovering what the most common mistakes affiliates make can perhaps dispel the gloom about myths surrounding affiliate marketing by correcting some wrong notions about it. It might also be able to make those concerned understand that like any other business, there are dos and donts involved in this one if they want to make each of their steps count. The first common mistake affiliates make is their lack of knowledge concerning principles involved in their business. This refers to the affiliate’s knowledge of search engines in particular.

Affiliate marketing involves advertising, and advertising through the internet could not have been better without the existence of search engines. What every affiliate has to do is to make these search engines his best friend through studying search engine optimization closely. This way, he is able to know what to do in connection with building a better website to ultimately use for his business.

The second is that affiliates make the mistake of stuffing their sites with banners that do not provide enough information about the product at hand. The best way to battle this mistake is to provide good content hand-in-hand with such banners. It is important for customers to know and understand the features of a product, and good content will be able to help them realize this goal.

The third is that there are affiliates who make the mistake of promoting only one product. Consequently, customers are not given enough options to choose from. There is also the risk of generating fewer sales as compared to having more options for customers ponder about. It is always better to give them a few better alternatives than to give them only one.

The fourth is that there are affiliates who make the mistake of promoting too many products. As a result, customers are confused and end up beyond making a choice. It is perhaps good to give them only the best choices. This is because it is ultimately up to them to judge which one is the best for them to patronize.

All in all, affiliates that are doomed to fail in this business are those who do not exert enough effort to understand everything involved in the industry that they are in. Knowing their path step by careful step will prove to be beneficial to them, as there is no other way to succeed than to go through any path slowly but surely.

The 5 Worst Home-Based Business Scams

By: Ben Welch

In a forum devoted to education and careers, a blog devoted to this topic was inevitable - home-based business scams. Anyone who has an email account has gotten an email - if not a thousand - like this:

Earn an Extra $5K+ per month!
Make your financial dreams happen!
Free information and training package!

Usually, the email includes a testimonial or two from people “just like you.”

Before I started this business, I used to [insert bad career here]. But I started working [insert home-based business opportunity here] and made $2500 my first month! By my sixth month, I was making $11,000. This business is a dream come true!

Some of these emails can be fairly persuasive, especially if it’s been a tight month. I mean, who wouldn’t want to earn a little extra money? Then I think of the old adage, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” and I realize I’m probably dealing with a home-based business scam. At that point, the email becomes ridiculous.

But the truth is that thousands - if not tens of thousands - of people fall for these scams every day. Sadly, for many of these people, that decision will be disastrous. Home-based business scams tend to target people who can ill afford such a misstep - the sick and disabled, the elderly, stay-at-home mothers, low-income families, and people lacking a college education. (Note: it’s not that people without college educations are less intelligent per se; rather, because they don’t have college degrees, chances are they are more inclined to take risks.)

For anyone who’s ever received these emails - or who every will - let me identify five of the most common and pernicious home business scams, which I’ve gleaned from several websites issuing similar warnings. Think of it as a public service announcement.

1. Multi-level Marketing (MLM)

Basically, multi-level marketing entails selling some kind of product or service but also rewards the participant for recruiting other people to join. Typically, early recruits are paid by the entry fees gleaned from new recruits, who in turn must collect their rewards from others. Each level feeds (or builds) off the one after it, which is why MLMs are sometimes referred to as “pyramid schemes.” Granted, not all MLMs are true pyramid schemes - which is illegal in most states - but most MLMs still rely on deception in order to succeed. As such, beware of MLM “opportunities” that promise large incomes for selling dubious products and recruiting fellow distributors.

2. Reshipping Fraud

Reshipping involves receiving mail merchandise and then repackaging and reshipping it for a substantial profit. Sounds easy, right? The only problem is that the merchandise was paid for with stolen credit cards, which means you - the reshipper - are acting as a “fence” for stolen goods. Reshipping fraud is relatively new to the realm of home-business fraud; as such, reshipping “opportunities” still appear in legitimate newspapers and websites, which lend them an air of credibility. Don’t be fooled. Reshipping fraud is not only illegal but also dangerous.

3. Craft Assembly

The variations on this scam are legion, but essentially it involves a company outsourcing the assembly of its product to you. All you need is a start-up kit and raw materials, which you purchase from the company, of course, and which you can do at home. Once you’ve assembled the products - toys, magnets, jewelry - you send it back to the company only to find that your products “fail to meet specifications.” You’re left with a bunch of useless products and no one to sell them to. Beware.

4. Medical Billing

The basic sales pitch with medical billing is that the health care industry is inundated with unprocessed paper claims and there’s a need for someone - you - to process these claims electronically. The beauty of this scam is that it’s true - there is a need and you can make money processing claims. The training you receive from promoters, while overpriced, will be legitimate. The only problem is that once you’ve finished your training you have to generate your own business. That’s where the scam comes in - promoters tend to over-hype their ability to get you contacts within the medical community. The fact is that few medical-billing entrepreneurs are able to attract clients and earn a reasonable income. The truth is that the medical billing market revolves around several large firms and competition is stiff.

And finally…

5. Envelope Stuffing

The doyen of home-based business scams has been around since the 1920s. One website even referred to it as the “cockroach you just can’t eliminate.” Basically, this scam involves you sending off a fee to learn how to make money stuffing envelopes from home. Shortly thereafter, you get a letter telling you to place a similar envelope-stuffing ad in magazines and newspapers. That way, people will send money to you to learn how to make money stuffing envelopes. You, in turn, send them a similar letter about placing envelope-stuffing ads in other magazines and newspapers. In short, the way you earn money stuffing envelopes is by propagating the envelope-stuffing scam.

To conclude, let me just observe what these home-based business scams have in common: it’s true that they lie, exaggerate, and misrepresent their products and services. That being said, the only reason they work is because people let themselves be carried away by delusions of “getting rich quick” or “making easy money.” In other words, these scams, like all confidence games, feed off of greed and, in some cases, desperation. Don’t be a victim. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Remember that the only foolproof ways to increase your earning potential are hard work and education.

Marketing Tips – For Online and Off

By: Bruce T. Woodward

So, you have probably read my previous articles for Internet Marketing for your internet business. To begin this article, I must say that the tips that I offer, even though directed mainly towards online businesses, can be implemented in/for online and offline businesses alike.

No doubt that you have seen me write about the importance of search engines, despite what some articles and “gurus” might tell you. I am not saying that you cannot succeed without search engines, but they really do help your site. I discussed that further in my article “Home Based Business Marketing – How To Succeed” (you can read that article either at http://www.Profiting4less.com/articles.aspx or on http://www.ezinearticles.com, so I will not argue that point in this article.

This article is directed more towards HOW to advertise/list your site on the search engines, and other available sites.

Search Engines:
There really is no secret here. The best way to get your site “crawled” by the search engine(s) is to look up their “submit a site” link. Yes, it is painstaking, but in the end you will know that your site will be “crawled” … in time. You are probably asking yourself, ‘but what about those programs that submit your site to hundreds of search engines’? I will ask you another question … how many search engines do you know and use on a daily basis? Take those search engines, and you probably get the same ones that the majority uses on a daily basis. Google, Yahoo!, AltaVista, AOL, MSN, Excite, Ask, and Netscape. Sure there are more, and some people don’t even think of that many. My theory is that if you can think of it, your customer can. If you cannot, they probably cannot either. As well, if you can get your site listed on the major search engines the “others” will pick it up from them. And, yes I have tried such ’submission tools’ and have had poor success getting hits from them.

Search engines love robots.txt files. Create on. Even if it is a blank .txt file, name it robots.txt and put it in the root directory of your website. Search engines will thank you for it. You can Google sites about how to configure robots.txt files, from blank to complicated … it’s your call.

Free Advertisement:
If you have read previous articles of mine, you will have seen that I am at best lukewarm to the idea of ‘free’ advertising. Yes, it is free in regards to your wallet, but not your time which can be at least as equally important. This is not to say that I discredit any and all free advertising and advertising services, as some are worth the time to set up campaigns. One of these is Traffic Swarm. I have used them for years, and have had probably the best success of any free services. It is completely free, and they do a good job of targeting your customers. So as long as you follow the rules, and set the proper groups to advertise to when setting up your account, you should get solid traffic. I have. But, as with anything, results will vary. There are others out there. But be wary. Always remember, time is money. If you spend too much time on ‘free’ ads, you will essentially be losing money, or money you could have made had you just paid a couple of bucks.

Forums:
I am not sure why, but many people forget – or perhaps do not know – the importance of forums! Most forums are free spaces to rant, chat, discuss things that are on your mind and others’ minds, but most of all can be great advertising media! Now, most forums have policies (and rightfully so) against outright advertising, almost none of them have policies against adding links in your signature of the forum, at least within reason. For instance, if I am in a forum of any kind, I will put my name but also right after, http://profiting4less.com/default.aspx. Now, if I have more than one site, for courtesy, I do not put the others. I limit it to one (at very most two) links per signature. Some forums will site you for advertising against their policies (spamming) if you put more than one or two links in your signature. A great way to get your name out there, even if you are chatting about something completely off-topic from what you are selling!

I hope that these tips will help you in your advertising efforts. Please feel free to check out http://profiting4less.com/default.aspx for more tips.
