Working Through Distractions as a Work at Home Mom

By Tara Martindale

Mom’s who work at home may be plagued with distractions. They probably have the most distractions than anyone in the work force. The kids that are home that mom is taking care of is a big distraction by itself, but when you add family and friends stopping in or the phone ringing to the mix, very little work may get accomplished. This may make it very difficult to get caught up and stay caught up.

There are many work at home opportunities for moms so they can stay home and take care of their children while still bringing in an income for the family. Most of the work at home opportunities allow moms to make their own hours or schedule as long as any work that has a deadline is in on time. Having a relaxed dress code is a great advantage also. When at home with the children moms would rather be comfortably dressed.

Before the internet there were the product assembly at home or stuffing envelopes at home opportunities. A lot of these ended up being either a scam or unrealistic for moms who stay home. To assemble products at home requires assembling a lot of them to earn any kind of income. Probably unrealistic for the moms who do not have a lot of free time on their hands. Now a mom has to decide which work at home opportunity is worthy of her time and effort.

It would be ideal for moms who stay home to have a large network of other moms who also stay home and earn an income. They can exchange ideas for working efficiently while taking care of the kids. A group like this can also create new businesses based on the needs of the group. They can not be the only moms in this situation, so coming up with work at home opportunities for other moms is something they can work on together. They can research and find the legitimate opportunities and help others fulfill their needs for working at home.
Another advantage of having a large network of other moms is they can help each other out when needed. If a mom is falling behind because of family issues, another mom can help her get the job done. They can swap favors and if they live close they can exchange babysitting or get out of the house for a while to work at a nearby library or café. Moms should not feel alone when trying to earn an income while staying home with the children.

Having a network of other moms who work at home can also be useful when trying to find a work at home business opportunity. They can share information about the best opportunities that offer the best income potential and also the ones that are fraudulent. They can protect each other from falling for scams and suffering the consequences. Also sharing each others success can motivate others to strive for a better life that they deserve.

About Blogs, Feeds and Pings

By: Xodigo

When I first heard about Blogging I was told that it would “drive tons of traffic to my web site”. It didn’t.

I did try though. I signed up for a free Blog account, typed in some “relevant” content and tried to follow the complicated, (bizarre?) highly techie instructions on how to Ping myself. (All I got back from the pinging service was an equally bizarre error message - no instructions on what to do, just the error message. I didn’t really want to “ping myself” anyway!)

I kept at it and did eventually figure out what all the silly “XML” or “RSS” buttons meant (which only showed a weird, unformatted page anyway with a weird error message associated with it). Fortunately, times have changed and most of this got both easier and better explained. Here’s an overview:

Blogging: a web log. In the early days blogs seemed to all read the same - “I woke up this morning, brushed my teeth and realized how wonderful the car looked …”. Fascinating! Those were truly web logs or personal diaries. Now-a-days you can find blogs which are interesting and helpful on any subject you can think of.

I like to think of on-line blogs as a combination of (relatively) easy-to-use software where you can add your thoughts, commentary or expertise without having to create new web-pages each time (and trying to add the navigation to the new page). Most free blogging services are in fact relatively easy to use. You do have to produce some decent content before anyone will visit, but that is true of anything you produce.

What comes after you have produced your decent content is the usual … you have to somehow let the world (and Aunt Martha) know about your blog.

There are many ways to “advertise” your blog. One way is to submit your blog site to the special blog submission services (I list several on my Submit to Blogs page). This is basically the same as submitting your website to directories or search engines. You submit the blog title, description and URL and hope that information gets into search machines. If you have a blog, you should do this anyway.
What submitting your blog to search engines does NOT do is tell the world (or Aunt Martha) when you have added another entry or written a new article. For that process to be semi-automatic you need to submit your “Feed”. You have doubtless seen “news tickers” either on TV or on the web. They show constantly new headlines coming off the news wire. Submitting your Feed is a bit like that. Feed services take your content and Feed it into the blog system. That means you can concentrate more on producing decent content than on telling the world (and Aunt Martha) you just wrote something new.

And thus back to the silly “XML” or “RSS” buttons you often trip over on web sites (fortunately the buttons are a bit more explanatory now-a-days, but not much). Those buttons are linked to a subscription service which allow people to know when you updated your blog. So instead of emailing Aunt Martha everyday to tell her you wrote something new, she can come once to your site, click your “Add / My Yahoo / My Google” or whatever subscription service she registered with and see for herself whether you wrote anything new without even going near your blog.

There is one more thing you may have to do though. You may have to Ping the services so they know you have updated your blog. (Most software automates this, but not all.) The Pinging service or list just tells those other services that you have posted a new article so that they can come to your site and index it.
Clear as mud? Some things are best explained by trying them. You can create a free blog at WordPress - they also explain as clearly as possible all these technical terms. (There are many, many more technical terms and jargon :-(.)

Will creating a blog “drive tons of traffic to your website”? It certainly won’t drive any traffic to your site unless the content is great and you submit your blog, your feed and make sure you are pinging more than the submarine next door. But many people are predicting that Microsoft’s push into blogging may make it worth while - at least when the new operating system, Vista, is launched. Actually, I predict it won’t change much until the jargon and terminology gets simpler and the instructions easier … we’ll see.

5 Ways To Organise Your Way To Success!

By: Katie Forrest

While working from home has many advantages and is a dream come true for many people, people often have difficulty adjusting to the new routine. Suddenly, you are your own boss and in charge of your own time. You have work to do and goals to achieve, but there is nobody ready to shout at you if you wake up late or watch Oprah instead of making some calls!

If you are not having the results you want from your home business, you may simply need to be more organised.

Here are five steps that you can take right away to boost your home business:

1. Plan your time in advance. Know exactly when you will be working on your business each week and spend Sunday evenings planning as much of this time as you can. Each week ask yourself what you want to have achieved by Friday afternoon. Review your progress for 10 minutes each morning before beginning work, and for 10 minutes each afternoon/evening after finishing work.

2. Do the most difficult things first. If there is something that needs going on Tuesday, and you really don’t want to do it - DO IT FIRST! Otherwise, you will spend all day working ineffectively because the dreaded task will be at the back of your mind. Don’t put yourself under that pressure! Just get it done and out of the way. Most jobs aren’t anywhere near as scary as you imagine them to be.

3. Keep the kids busy! It can be a nightmare trying to run a home business while your children are demanding attention, so try to combine the two. If your little darling has a regular nap in the day, make that your work time. If your children are older, try working at the kitchen table while they do their homework with you. Talk to your children about your business so that they understand that sometimes you have to work.

4. Use a day planner. Some people like paper diaries, some people use computer software, others have day planning tools on their phones! Find a system that works for you and take advantage of it.

5. Develop a follow up system. I’m constantly amazed by the number of WAHMs (and dads!) who have no consistent follow-up system. The money is in the follow-up! If you speak to a lead on Thursday who doesn’t want to buy right away, when do you speak to her again? Never? When you remember? Decide exactly when you will follow-up on people.

The overall idea here is that you have to treat your business as a business. You wouldn’t expect your dentist to decide his working hours each day, or your doctor to delay sending off your blood sample because he had to fill in a really long, dull form to send with it. As soon as you see yourself as running a business, you will see the results you want.

15 Marketing Tips to Increase Your Profits

By: SadieJane

1-Focus your website on your visitors and customers desires, not on yourself. Be sure they know what is in it for them, not that you won an award for your business. For example, do not make your ad mostly about what you have done; make it about what benefits the reader will get from buying your products or service.

2-Allow visitors to submit a free classified ad on your web site. Require them to give a valid e-mail address in order to post an ad. You could also require them to return after a set time to resubmit. You could also ask that they give you a reciprocal link in return on their web site.

3-Allow other people to publish your e-zine articles on their web site. Include your website ad and link in each issue you publish. This may also help you increase the number of people who subscribe to your e-zine. You could also allow people to use your full issue for their own e-zine as long as they include your links and signature.

4-When you purchase a product or visit a site and it exceeds your expectations or has great information, e-mail a testimonial to the company. Make sure your statement is detailed. Give them permission to publish it on their web site if they link to your site. For example, under your testimonial you could sign it (your name) Author of (your book) Visit (your site).

5-Give away the e-book or software as a gift to your current customers as a way of letting them know you appreciate their business. Place an ad in the e-book for a new back-end product you’re offering. For example, you could say, We Are Giving You This E-book As A Way To Say Thanks For Being One Of Our Loyal Customers.

6-Make money cross-promoting your e-book with other peoples products or services; this is a great easy technique and could double your marketing effort without spending more time and money on your part. For example, you could package your business e-book with a search engine submission service and it is a win, win situation for you both.

7-When you create a new product or service; just give your subscribers a free copy or limited membership. These folks are the most likely to purchase the upgrade and of course pass it on to friends.

8-You can earn residual income from your customers by selling back-end products. If you do not have any, you could sign up to related affiliate programs. For example, you could say Thanks for ordering our product. If you would like to learn more about web marketing, I highly recommend (affiliate product)!

9-Most people want life to be easier and quicker. Give your prospects easy ordering instructions, easy product instructions, etc. For example, you could say, our product comes with step-by-step, easy ordering instructions! Also make sure your website is as easy as possible to navigate.

10-Reward your customers for giving you feedback on your product or service, it could be discounted products, useful software, information products, etc. For example, you could say, Could you please give us any helpful feedback on how to improve our product or service and you will get a free business e-book or software program.

11-Give away a follow-up e-mail course on anything helpful pertaining to your product or service. Include your ad with each lesson. People will buy quicker when they see your ad repeatedly. For example, how many times have you bought something because you have seen the advertisement on TV or in the news paper over a period of a few of weeks?

12-Run a contest or sweepstakes for your customers or visitors, give away free ebooks or reports, cash, t-shirts, caps anything with your company logo. People love freebies, Use short polls or surveys for them to enter and increase your opt in lists. Plus be sure to use email to announce winners and notify them of new contests in the future.

13-Add forums or message boards to your site. It will give you visitors a way to be more active on your website. An article section is also a good idea and gives your customers a reason to return more often.

14-Create urgency for a product or offer, you want buyers to buy now. Tell buyers your offer will not be available again. You can always sell that product again with bonuses or a special priced package. Plus you can put a limit on the actual number of products for sale.

15-Turn your ads into a story or How to articles, people are more likely to continue reading your copy if you do this. People love stories, tall tales and humor, use these in your marketing and on your website.
